I am a self designed major focusing on semiotics and the philosophy of education. Semiotics is the study of meaning and also of great interest to me. By creating and assigning meaning we create our own personal realities. This ties in to my major because when we educate someone we influence the way in which they create the reality relevant to them. This education and reality are the tools they use to navigate life and thus are very important. My aim is to learn ways to encourage students to learn in ways that not only suit them but help them throughout their lives as well.
The reasons for choosing these fields are fairly straight forward. Before switching to IDS I was an Anthropology major. I enjoyed the discussions about the development of humans as a species and the ways they grow in cultural aspects.I knew I wanted to continue my studies in this but I did not want to do it in anthropology. Instead I want to teach and so I needed my courses to reflect my goal. IDS has given me the opportunity to follow my interests.
