Project Decision

The topic I have chosen for my project is the one about science fiction. Through research and reading I want to uncover the ways in which science fiction deals with the education of (for lack of a better term) outsiders. By looking, and reading, several novels as well as using other sources such as film and television I should be able to find what I am looking for. My “thesis statement” then is: What are some ways in which the science fiction genre deals with the problems of multicultural interaction. When I say “education of outsiders” I mean that I am looking for how these fictional books and films deal with the real life problem of multicultural interaction and education. As an added bonus the science fiction genre has interactions with extraterrestrials, which brings up interesting questions as well as insights into how humans would view themselves in relation to these extraterrestrials. Along with the paper that I will write on my findings I will also write a short story dealing directly with the problems of an outsider in a new world.

  1. Nice! I like this topic. I'm not sure I'm comfortable with the term "outsider" in this context. The multicultural education rubric sounds more likely. But you can do some reading and research to help settle on the appropriate descriptive language. I'm looking forward to seeing what sci-fi books and short stories make your list.

Do you know LeGuin's short story, "The One's That Walk Away From Omelas?"

  2. This is super interesting although its definitely not without its challenges. I think that sci-fi is very indicative of our social memes at the times they are written. I think one good source for your might be GATTACA, which I am sure you have seen, for its cultural relevance and critic. Very interested to see where this takes you.
